La chanson de Prévert ( The song of Prévert)

Oh je voudrais tant que tu te souviennes
Oh, I so want you to remember
Cette chanson était la tienne
this song was yours
C'était ta préférée
It was her favorite*
Je crois
I think
Qu'elle est de Prévert et
it it Prévert and
Kosma
Kosma

Et chaque fois 'Les Feuilles mortes'
And everytime the Autumn Leaves
Te rappelle à mon souvenir
brings you back to my memory
Jour après jour
Day after Day
Les amours mortes
The dead loves
N'en finissent pas de mourir
don't end up dead

Avec d'autres bien sûr je m'abandonne
Of course I sleep with other women*
Mais leur chanson est monotone
but their song is monotonous
Et peu à peu je m'in-diffère
And little by little, I stop caring*
A cela il n'est rien
for them, there is nothing*
A faire
to do about*

Car chaque fois 'Les Feuilles mortes'
For each time there's Autumn Leaves

Te rappelle à mon souvenir
they bring you back to my memory
Jour après jour
Day after Day
Les amours mortes
The dead loves*
N'en finissent pas de mourir
are constantly dying*

Peut-on jamais savoir par où commence
Can we ever know where it begins*
Et quand finit l'indifférence
and when it ends, the indifference*
Passe l'automne vienne
Let autumn pass*
L'hiver
so winter (can come)*
Et que la chanson de
and the song of
Prévert
Prévert

Cette chanson 'Les Feuilles mortes'
This song Autumn Leaves
S'efface de mon souvenir
fades from my memory
Et ce jour-là
And that day
Mes amours mortes
my dead loves*
En auront fini de mourir
will stop dying*

  1. Hi Greg. I found some translations that deduce the word "withering" from the last line of the chorus.
    "N'en finissent pas de mourir..."
Would make sense with the allusion to dead leaves and autumn...

    What do you think?

  3. Greg - This is a great idea. Allow me to make some corrections:

Je crois.. qu'elle est de Prévert et Kosma
I think it's Prévert and Kosma (i.e., her favorite song was by them)

    N'en finissent pas de mourir
Are constantly dying (note the double negative; the use of "en" is idiomatic)

Avec d'autres bien sûr je m'abandonne
The meaning is, "Of course I sleep with other women"

Et peu à peu je m'in-diffère
And little by little, I stop caring (for them)
    A cela il n'est rien... a faire
There's nothing to be done about it

Peut-on jamais savoir par où commence...Et quand finit l'indifférence
Can we ever know where indifference begins and ends?

    Passe l'automne vienne… L'hiver
The complete saying is “que passe l'automne pour que vienne l'hiver,” or “let autumn pass so that winter may come."

Mes amours mortes...En auront fini de mourir
My dead loves will have stopped dying

    Keep it up!
